Prof. Rachel Cowgill

Prof. Rachel Cowgill

Head of Music & Drama in the School of Music, Humanities and Media at the University of Huddersfield.

NAMHE committee portfolio:

  • Chair
  • Infrastructure & External Relations
  • A-HUG Representative

"I joined the NAMHE committee in 2012, when I was co-opted to represent HE music staff in Wales, and I was elected chair (and fully fledged committee member) shortly afterwards. My tenure as chair runs for three years and in response to a survey of the membership I have set three main priorities: to develop NAMHE’s effectiveness in lobbying and advocacy for music education in UK HE; to enhance NAMHE’s communication and web presence; and to further develop links with other organisations representing performing arts education in the UK. With Miguel Mera I am working on a series of videos highlighting ‘The Value of a Music Degree’, which will be circulated freely via the NAMHE website, YouTube, Facebook, etc., to inform sixth-formers, parents, policy makers, teachers, and so on, about the cultural, economic and social benefits of studying music at university and music college. I am also working with Dr Danijela Bogdanovic on a report and toolkit for music departments and institutions that are considering an application to the Equality Challenge Unit’s Gender Equality Mark scheme. On behalf of NAMHE I have responded to several recent government consultations and I am also NAMHE’s representative in the Arts & Humanities User Group."
